It's a fairly well known fact that a lot of groceries are shrinking volume wise but the price remains the same or has risen.
I have and always will be a label reader, especially as to how much is in the box or jar etc. and also the nutrition portion which is very important to me these days.
In a future post I'll write about my lifelong escapades with that monster high blood pressure.
I have a smaller matter to address today. I found a can of chunky chicken breast meat in my pantry while looking for something to eat for lunch. Before I opened it, I read the label to make sure it was in the realm of my being able to eat some of it.
It states that it is 5 oz. of white chicken in water. No problem there. It states that there are two and a half servings inside at two ounces per serving. No problem there. It states there is 180 mgs of sodium in each serving. Again, no problem there.
Out came my strainer, the entire can of chicken and water went into the strainer, and I then rinsed the product that remained in the strainer. My next step was to weigh what was left so I dumped it on my scale. Sit down...I don't want anyone to fall over while reading this.
The actual weight of the chicken was 2-1/2 ounces.
It's the last can in my pantry of that product and I'll never buy it again. Things would not be so bad if we at least got what we paid for according to the weight on the label, but this is pure highway robbery at its best.

That is depressing. I used to like going to the grocery store.
Cereal is the worst! Mothers of new babies - don't let them touch cereal so that they never know what it tastes like!
Highway robbery, indeed!
Was that chicken with a big S on the label? That is ridiculous!
Now I'm going to have to go measure my tuna.
I totally agree on the cereal too. I wish I could wean my husband from it.
Peruby ~ I only buy brand name cereal if it's on sale and if I also have a coupon. For the most part we eat store brand and it is just as good and in most cases it's healthier.
Marti ~ No S on the label but I have had problems with that brand as well. As far as tuna goes, I buy the albacore because regular tuna (even the name brands) are floating in water when opened. I don't buy the oil kind so no idea what that's like. I like to see every inch of the inside of the can filled to the edges. Fool me once and I won't buy it again.
It is really sad. I guess the manufacturers really believe the consumer is so stupid that we don't realize even though the price MAY be the same, there is less product.
