I am so angry with myself that if I could kick me in the arse I would...tenfold.
I made my own chili using several different recipes as a guide. I bought no salt added tomato products. I used all natural products. I even bought the kidney beans you have to soak overnight. And I bought my first jar of cumin. I took note, however, that I would replace the chili powder with a fresher jar the next time I went shopping.
I fried the 90% hamburger along with the freshly diced onions, added that to my slow cooker and then added the remaining ingredients. Within a few hours things were smelling mighty delicious throughout the house. What I smelled was total success.
Dinner time arrived, we sat down and ate our chili. It tasted quite good. I was real proud of myself since I always relied on those packets of chili seasoning whenever I made chili over the years.
That was two days ago. Fast forward to this afternoon while we were having chili leftovers. I like my chili hot. Which means I add more powder at the table. I did that and then while I was eating I picked the jar up and started reading it. I don't know why I did that but I sure am glad I did.
Do you people know that there are 35 milligrams of sodium in an eighth of a teaspoon of chili powder? My recipe called for two tablespoons of it. I should have just stuck with one of those packets. I was furious. At myself and at the people who make the powder. Better yet, had I know that I would never have attempted to make chili.
I have since found out I can make chili powder without sodium. Had I any smarts I would have found that out in the first place. I am trying so hard to cut back on my sodium intake and the industry makes a fool of me. Or was it the devil?

I have never figured out why seasoning packets always have so much salt. That and bouillon cubes. Sorry about your chili. (But it does sound good in this weather.)
Does not surprise me any. There is so much sodium in everything. I hope this was only a minor setback towards your knockout punch and does not show on Tuesday.
Salt lurks in everything. I have a 'family' recipie that uses powdered chilli - let me know if you'd like it. Jx
Oh come on! I think you're making a big deal out of nothing.
A gram is less than a teaspoon, so 35 milligrams is less than 35 thousandths of a teaspoon.
Many farmers give their cows blocks of salt to lick, the beef probably has more sodium than that.
You can only do as best as you can, don't beat yourself up.
Now, can I have a bowl of that chili?
Salt hides everywhere! I think you didn't really have enough to make a real difference.
Your chili sounds great!
MarkD60 ~ Here's the thing Mark. I would not be upset if I only ingested 35 mgs of sodium. I used 2 Tablespoons to make the chili and then each time I ate I dumped a lot more powder onto my already made chili. There are 1680 mgs in the entire chili recipe and with what I dumped on afterward, I ate a large amount of sodium. My sodium intake should not be more than 1500 mgs per day. Chili isn't all that I ate that day.
Good news all: I have since found sodium-free chili powder! I also found several recipes on how to make chili powder. I just wish I had read that label before using what I had on hand.
Yep, salt is hiding everywhere. It is amazing how much salt is in pre-packaged foods.
One thing you might try for chili is cayenne pepper rather than chili powder. The spice form of cayenne pepper id salt free. The liquid forms contain salt.
